History

The history of the school goes back to 1885,when a normal school was started in Trivandrum by the Government of Travancore for the training of male teachers. It was situated in the compound where St.Joseph's Higher Secondary school is situated at present. In 1903 it was shifted to Thycaud. The magnificent main building of the school, an example of European architecture, was built in 1910[2] during the reign of Maharaja Sree Moolam Thirunal Ramavarma.[3]

The institution flourished under the leadership of the first Headmaster Dr.C F Clarke. He served in office for three years. He lived inside the school campus, the bungalow in which he stayed still remains as Clarkes's Bungalow. The school was the city's first English, Malayalam, Tamil medium school.

The school today

The school has 5000 students from classes from one to twelve (popularly known as +2) who are being educated by a teaching staff of 150. The school has multiple buildings to house the students - from the imperialistic main building, to the newly created modern PTA Building. The school seats around 500 students every year for the SSLC and Higher Secondary Exams.

Model School comes under 2 Kerala battalion of NCC.

Higher Secondary School

When the Kerala State Board of Education decided to move the 2 year intermediate course (the course between High School and University) from colleges to schools in 1998, Model School was part of the program. As part of this change, the name of the school was changed to Government Model Higher Secondary School.
